Community Mediation Centres were first set up in Singapore in 1998 with the mission of developing a “more harmonious, civil and gracious community, where social conflicts can be resolved amicably” in keeping with our Asian traditions and culture. A quarter of a century on, we join some of the dedicated mediators in our midst who serve in these centres to find out what motivates them to contribute their time and effort to this cause, as well as some of the challenges they face and the strategies they employ to help disputants. Whether you’re a community leader, mediator, or just passionate about conflict resolution, this discussion offers invaluable insights and strategies to foster harmony and understanding between diverse communities.

About Mr Stephen Poh A career financial sector professional, Stephen ‘recycled’ himself, emerging as a part of the ADR industry, focusing on mediation. In the last 26 years Stephen has been volunteering as a mediator with the Ministry of Law’s Community Mediation Centre Unit and concurrently is its designated mediator at the Community Disputes Resolution Tribunals (CDRT). He is also a volunteer with the Community Justice Centre as a FRENS (Friend Engaging and Support Scheme), and FLiP (Friend of Litigant in Person). As a FRENS and a FLiP and in other CJC’s activities, volunteers generally provide court users emotional and practical guidance. In most instances mediation skills help to better facilitate court processes. Additionally, Stephen is a designated Ministry of Manpower (MOM) mediator under the auspice of the Foreign Domestic Worker Association for Social Support and Training (FAST). He is currently a mediator with A Mediation Company where activities revolve around workplace and business disputes. He is also a consultant with a disposable medical product manufacturer and a Medical Concierge. |

About Ms Katherine Yap Katherine Yap is a leading figure in the establishment and growth of Maxwell Chambers in Singapore. With over 15 years of experience, she has been instrumental in driving sales growth, leading transformation, and advocating innovation in the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) arena. Katherine played a key role in the expansion of Maxwell Chambers with the establishment of Maxwell Chambers Suites and co-founding of the International Arbitration Centre Alliance (IACA). She is certified as an Associate Mediator at the Singapore Mediation Centre and Master Mediator for the Community Mediation Centre and Mediator for the Singapore International Mediation Institute. She is also on the Panel of Mediators with Beihai Asia International Arbitration Centre and Executive Committee of the Society of Mediation Professionals (Singapore). She has over 10 years of experience in mediation and actively presides over mediation cases with the CMC. |

Moderator: Ms Lum Kit-Wye Kit-Wye is an Associate Professor at the Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University where she teaches business law, negotiation and dispute resolution to both the undergraduates and post-graduate students. She is on the Singapore International Mediation Centre’s panel of International Mediators, a Principal Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre, an accredited mediator on the Panel of Mediators with the State Courts Centre for Dispute Resolution, a SIMI Certified Mediator and an IMI Certified Mediator. |
